houses settling and unsettling

Paul and I headed over to Tre's new house last night with bread, salt and wine to make an obscure Frank Capra reference.
It is a marvelously weird little Bungalow in the shadow of Stone Mountain and as I wound through the rooms on the grand tour, I let the feel of the place permeate my consciousness. I felt vaguely disconnected somehow, like I was a ghost haunting up the place.
The room upstairs did nothing to dissuade my current theme. The stairs leading up to the room were completed by a person with few or no math skills and it was necessary to turn your feet out like a duck in order to scale them. It was a later addition with attic style cropped ceiling, and railings clinging to the stairwell that had clearly been taken from a gothic church. Small doors were on each side of the room leading to dark attic storage tunnels. Inexplicably I imagined rows upon rows of Tupperware inside, "Perfect for keeping those dismembered body parts fresh for days!"
Some angsty teen left scores of Metallica lyrics scrawled into the plaster, so future generations could confirm they were an idiot.

After practically repelling back down the dangerous face of the spectacularly bad staircase we all sat around on the floor in the living room and ate Dollar Chinese from Styrofoam trays. The radio was on in the kitchen and the DJ had just played Green Day. It was the first meal in the new house and we all smiled at each other with Kung Pao chicken stuck in our teeth and I finally started to feel a little less like an apparition.

Then a man crashed his airplane into the mountain.

Thank you!

yay!

Several things...

[identity profile] traumedy.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
1) I LOVE that Capra reference.

2) TRE GOT A NEW HOUSE? Did she buy it? Did she move because the old house finally became so small it got to be a residential sigularity?

3) It's pretty likely that the man crashing into the mountain was a warning to Tre...something like, "Oooooo...Don't live here because we're gonna dive bomb the house to terrorize you *SPLAT!*."

Tell her that if she moves now, the terrorists have won.

"1) I LOVE that Capra reference."

you're next!

Yes, she just closed on Monday before last and it is a cool damn house, probably more than twice as big as the one she has now.
It rocks my socks right off.
I am going to go with the World according to Garp take and say her neighborhood is pre-disasterized
Here is something weirder - Mickey and Veaya closed on their house last week to and aer moving in this weekend.

Ahh...

[identity profile] hardman.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
...Mickey and Veaya...Give them my love will ye?

Re: Ahh...

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
absolutely.

[identity profile] mommygalore.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
i find it amazing how the same moment in time can hold birth and death, housewarmings and homewrecking, joy and agony, foolishness and wisdom.

as always, you've made me think. thanks.

i'll be looking at my Tupperware a little differently now, too.

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it seems like every moment is like that for me... sometimes I wish I could shut the TV off you know?

As for your tupperware, just throw out the ones that don't have a good seal.
You are more than welcome.

[identity profile] mommygalore.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
you can turn off the tv any time you like.

except Enterprise is on now, so maybe in an hour or so. :)

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
well I meant the one in my head, but yeah I know... that Scott Bakula, I could ruin him in a single weekend given the chance.

[identity profile] mommygalore.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
heh. i hear that.

[identity profile] swallowwhole.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
here's how much of a movie buff i'm not:

i read the first part and said to myself "uh, they do that in it's a wonderful life..." and then had to look it up on google to make sure i was getting it, and that that flick was connected to this "frank capra" person.

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
hahhaaa!! that is A-okay, I don't think many folks know who Frank Capra is. Anyway you got the reference and that always wins you the kwepie doll.

[identity profile] rootie-kazootie.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird.
That would have freaked me out.

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a little weird.
It sounded like a truck bay door getting pulled down, at least that was what I thought it was. We were talking and then we heard sirens and I felt like something was wrong and Tre's sister got a phonecall from her boyfriend who told us.
It was a terribly surreal moment for me.

Reading the beginning, the name Stone Mountain struck a strange but unidentifiable memory. It wasnt until the end that I realized I'd just read about that crash in an aviation community this morning.

Always sad to lose one, but a careless pilot seems to weed themselves out. Chance takes care of the rest.

Sounds like that house has a ton of personality..

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Stone mountain is really pretty low for a mountain, at first I thought he might have killed himself. I read a couple of eyewitnes accounts today that said it looked like he was doung acrobatics so there is no telling otehr than the fact he was too damn low.

The house is really pretty neat - it needs some work, but I think that makes you love houses more.
I am helping her clean/paint on Sunday.

[identity profile] ferahga.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I read, it was fatal.. they'd only recovered one body, though. Not sure if he had others in the airplane..
It's illegal to do acrobatics over populated areas too : (

Lucky girl to have your help.. she might find herself with some ultra neat checkered ceilings!

?!? Did You Really Mean...

[identity profile] hardman.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
a plane CRASHED into the mountain?

Re: ?!? Did You Really Mean...

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, isn't that weird? I can't believe anyone would purposely fly that low unless they were fucking around or they intended to crash.
They hit right on the Southside.

[identity profile] smokedamage.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
how do you keep doing this?

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I am just sitting here, it all just keeps happening around me. :)

[identity profile] smokedamage.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
what happened on the day you were born?

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember... I was still tired from the move.

[identity profile] smokedamage.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
ho ho ho... you very funny lady...

[identity profile] nebuchadnezzar.livejournal.com 2003-09-17 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't had a chance to check up on this. This wasn't the guy with the biplane, was it? Because that would be a shame, that guy is awesome.

In case you're wondering what the Hell I'm talking about, there's a guy who (I think) gives aerial tours of Stone Mountain in a biplane - he flies over my parent's house a couple of times a day.

Mostly it was the comment about "acrobatics" that made me think this, as I don't think those Piper Cub planes or whatever are the type for doing that sort of thing.

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
No, no its wasn't that guy.
It was a cessna and you are correct about that, you can't get very acrobatic in those, which is why I suppose he ended up into the mountain face.

I love that biplane guy. I have always wanted to cough up, what is it? 50, 75 bucks? and get a ride in that plane.

[identity profile] lemon-says.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of old bungalows...

Wanna help me paint? :)

I heard about the accidental mountaineer. The people on the ground thought it sounded like it was having engine trouble, but like you, my first suspicion was suicide.

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, absolutely, although Mickey and Veaya possibly have me painting tomorrow night and Theresa has me Sunday. I keep asking Dave when he wants me to come over and he keeps saying that there is a "thing" that is going to occur on a Sunday, but I haven't heard anything yet.

[identity profile] lemon-says.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
We won't even have possession of the house until the 30th, so I'll start stalking you after that.

I too have heard of this elusive and vague Sunday "thing." You'd think that they were trying to move into a new house with an infant and new jobs or something, huh? Geez. :)

[identity profile] zeppo.livejournal.com 2003-09-18 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think they need to get their priorities straight, clearly WE come first!
