what the hell are you talking about?

I know most people seek solace in a higher power or search for patterns in the universe to try and make sense of things that at their essence make no sense. It seems as per my standard operating measure that just the reverse is true for me. Often it is far more pleasing to my psyche to allow the undercurrent of chaos to drag me here and there like a ragdoll.
I relish the idea that no grand cosmic bias exists to help or hinder me through my days.
We all get what we get and you can take practically nothing and rule the world with it, or you can sit on a big heap of everything and sob quietly to yourself.
It's your popsicle - it's all up to you if you want to suck or not.
I get asked frequently if my atheism causes conflicts with a few of my beliefs that are considered to be "spiritual" by some. I can honestly say it doesn't cause me to lay awake at night, but truthfully I have no explanations for the unusual things that occur around and to me.
So don't ask me to get out the slide rule when I say that a ghost told me the future and then it came true.

Date: 2003-11-25 08:11 am (UTC)it sounds like you're winding up for quite the swing...
Date: 2003-11-24 02:30 pm (UTC)It's interesting. My husband is an atheist, but is totally into the idea of supernatural things -- intelligent life on other planets, UFOs, ghosts, and unexplained scientific mysteries. I think that spirituality and a connection with mystery in life expresses itself differently in people. We as a culture can't use formalized religion as the only yardstick for spirituality anymore.
I have a profound appreciation for your popsicle theory.

Date: 2003-11-24 04:26 pm (UTC)And then spring comes. Spring always comes, and after a harsh northern winter, spring is the most beautiful thing in the world, and it's beauty for its own sake. It's beautiful whether I'm here or not, and spring was beautiful long before I got here and will continue to be beautiful long after I'm gone. And I find that incredibly comforting, that there will always be the glorious, frantic beauty of spring in the North Woods, regardless of whether or not there's anybody around to wax poetic about it.
