Massachusetts works of art - part II
Jun. 2nd, 2005 04:25 pmI had been warned before I embarked on my journey by one of the scaredy corporates not to be caught in Dedham after dark. So driving in I imagined some kind of ghetto/opium den peppered with wild-eyed cannibals, diseased chupacabras, or perhaps dark ladies of the night who have scissors at the ends of their wrists.
Imagine my surprise when I drove into what appeared to be the set for "Our Town."
It was a charming if not banal place. When I stopped off at the CVS to buy some tic-tacs I asked the person behind the counter what there is to do in Dedham, you know besides the bad art. He thought very hard and then said, "Nothing. There isn't anything to do here in Dedham."
I must have looked slightly disappointed because then he piped up excitedly and said, "Wait! We DO have the oldest wood framed house in the United States!"
I popped three tic-tacs while he explained to me how to get there.
Before staring at a really old house and reading rusty plaques however, I had a date with poorly rendered destiny.
